OK, why have I never heard of DARK STORIES: TALES FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE until just recently? Found out about this one after I'd tracked down the filmography of Sarah Smuts-Kennedy (who played Alexis Arquette's sister "Dora" in the classic JACK BE NIMBLE).While the dvd title and grisly-looking cover give you the impression that this is going to be along the lines of TALES FROM THE CRYPT (or the hundreds of other horror anthologies out there), it's actually a collection of "artsy" short films from New Zealand (although most of the stories admittedly have rather dark themes to them). And while some people might be complaining about false advertisement, those of us who remember the good ol' days when the movie posters for many a horror flick were often more than misleading won't be too upset. Especially when you realize, "OK, this isn't exactly what I was expecting...but overall, it's pretty darn entertaining!"Sarah Smuts-Kennedy is in the first short film ("Eau de la Vie"), which is probably the best of the collection. A young woman being inducted into to an upper-class society gets to choose the "entertainment" for the evening at a posh restaurant (much to her horror). Not going to give away anything more than that, don't want to ruin it for anybody...but talk about tense, edge-of-your-seat stuff! My next favorite has to be "Headlong," starring Timothy Balme (who played the zombie-battling Lionel in Peter Jackson's BRAINDEAD, aka DEAD ALIVE) which will convince anyone beyond a shadow of a doubt that picking up a hitchhiker (even a hot-looking chick) walking along the road at night is a really, really bad idea.If you're looking for the typical mainstream Hollywood horror stuff, then I wouldn't recommend this one. But if you're into something different--a dark collection with an artsy flair--you won't be disappointed.
