Every summer needs its soundtrack; an album which both reflects a magical time and lodges in the memory as something special, while also a springboard for memorable live shows, treasured festival peaks and the deep-coursing feeling that this was only the beginning. Caned & Able are about to unleash an album which will shock even those familiar with their earlier outings. Dark Matter is their step into the big league, a vibrant slab of accessibly melodic songs, still rippling with the thrill of studio laboratory experiments and draped in their trademark hallucinogenic sheen, topped and electrified by the explosive arrival of rapper-toaster-singer Big G, who effortlessly coaxes, cajoles and elevates the new songs into realms of further discovery and crowd-igniting angst. The new seven-piece Caned & Able chart their delirious sonic roller-coaster with no little mischief on missives such as Lyrical G , which unfurls like a brontosaurus dry-humping early Funkadelic on acid, along with a severe toasting of Bulletproof Vest . The men and women at C&A also excel on the slower paced excursions, like Big G s impassioned plea for tolerance on Love And Hate and the ethnically mournful Who Am I? - both framed by shimmering keyboards, haunting valley strings and those inimitable atmospherics. Meanwhile, Raver harks back to early 70 s slide guitar-iced rock soul. The album ends with possibly their most ambitious piece yet, the epic 16 minutes of The Last Chapter which starts as delicate, lysergic ballad, before dropping to pulsating ambience, building back with drones and loops before the beat re-enters to lead the track to its climactic home stretch; a complex mini-symphony to close one of 2011 s truly remarkable albums. Dark Matter is released as CD and digital download with iTunes bonus live track Interpret Me , plus a limited edition vinyl picture disc to be released later in the summer. Launches are planned in London on May 25th and Big G s hometown of Northampton on May 26th. Summer festival appearances are currently being lined up at Winterwell, Glastonbury, Beautiful Days, Secret Garden Party, The Big Chill, Shambala, Notting Hill Carnival and Bestival.
